Oui c'est vrai maintenant que je fais le rapport avec le Bayern qui est allé en finale de LDC et dont plusieurs joueurs sont allés loin à la

coupe du monde (des allemands, des néerlandais) il est évident que cette équipe ne se montre effectivement pas à son meilleur niveau elle aussi.

Le seul contre exemple c'est peut-être le Barça qui semble tenir le choc. Remarquez qu' Iniesta a bien géré le mondial et ce début de saison alors que la saison dernière il a été blessé (reposé) pendant une bonne période, ceci explique peut-être cela...

(c'est un HS mais du coup la CAN qui a lieu tous les 2ans ne serait-elle pas en défaveur du football africain au final vu que ses meilleurs représentants qui jouent en Europe risquent de se cramer à terme...?!)

Aussi je n'y avait pas pensé avant mais Benitez propose un football très éreintant physiquement, c'est surement pour ça qu'il y a énormément de blessés à l'Inter après une telle saison comme vous dîtes. Son erreur aurait-été aussi de ne pas ménager suffisamment ses joueurs en tout début de saison quitte à démarrer d'une plus mauvaise manière? Il ne voulait sans doute pas prendre de risque et la faute aurait été directement mise à son crédit alors que là on a pu dire que les joueurs étaient cramés... C'est peut-être ça qui est dérangeant, je ne suis pas fan de Mourihno mais je ne serais pas étonné qu'il puisse prendre ce type de décision à l'inverse de Benitez qui cherche peut-être un peu trop souvent à éviter d'être vu comme le responsable.

Et puis d'ailleurs au final Benitez n'avance pas non plus ce types d'explications, pour lui rester tel quel (mêmes joueurs) serait être comme sans projet ni ambition. Il ferait surement mieux d'attendre que ses joueurs (qui ont tout gagnés justement) reviennent de blessure et à leur meilleur niveau avant de tout de suite dire vouloir en commander d'autres...

Rafa Benitez faces sack in next 48 hours after astonishing attack on Inter Milan president

Rafa Benitez is expected to be sacked as Inter Milan boss in the next 48 hours after launching an astonishing attack on club owner Massimo Moratti.

The former Liverpool manager hit out moments after Inter’s 3-0 Club World Cup win over Africa’s TP Mazembe, as he used the post-match press conference to pour out months of pent-up frustration.

There were shades of his bitter war of words with ex-Liverpool co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett, towards the end of his time at Anfield, as he accused Moratti of showing favouritism to predecessor Jose Mourinho and fumed: 'Last year, Moratti spent 80 million euros on five players, but this year he has spent nothing for me.

'I don’t know why that has happened, but it has left me 100 per cent disappointed. I deserve more respect.

'In August, the club promised me three players, but none have arrived. I have had to shoulder all the blows and responsibilities.

'It seems to me there are three options now for the club. One, 100 per cent support for the coach and four or five new players to build a stronger team. Two, carry on like this, without a project or any planning and go ahead with one person to blame.

'Three, speak to my agent and reach an agreement. Simple.'

Benitez’s blunt ultimatum for Moratti to back him or sack him looked like backfiring, as Inter’s long-serving president made it clear he took a dim view of the outburst.

He vowed to savour Inter’s triumph but made it clear he was in the mood to end Benitez’s San Siro reign, after barely six months, once they returned to Milan.

Asked if Benitez had ruined the Inter party, Moratti said: 'No, for the moment, no. His comments are not suitable for the situation, but, for now, this Inter fan is a happy man.

'I am not going to talk about Benitez or his future for the moment.

'But clearly, this is not the moment to ask for reinforcements, and it is not something we will decide now.’

Benitez has kept his home on Merseyside and made no secret of his wish to return to Liverpool for a second spell in charge.

Current boss Roy Hodgson is under pressure, after a poor start, but new owner John Henry would be wary of taking on a coach with a track record for picking fights behind the scenes.

If Benitez is sacked, the FA will be bracing themselves for an approach for Fabio Capello from Inter.

Vous avez pas l'impression qu'il abuse un peu là? Autant à Liverpool c'était quand même justifiable de vouloir renforcer l'équipe, autant à l'Inter

De toutes façon, j'en ai eu assez depuis un moment de ses déclarations. Il a eu le temps de construire une équipe à Liverpool, il en était pas satisfait, et a remis la faute sur les Américains, et aucune sur lui ( alors qu'il était au club depuis pas mal de temps).

Maintenant, c'est Moratti qui prend. Si il n'est pas viré durant ces 48h, une chose est sûr: Il ne ferait pas 2 ans à l'Inter.

Et personnellement, je serai contre un 2e mandat à Liverpool.

Soccernomics Was Wrong: Transfer Expenditures

As was pointed out in Pay as You Play, Graeme Souness’ record at Liverpool was one of underachievement versus the financial resources expended. He had a MSq£ well into the twos for the one full season he was in the Premier League, while only being able to pull a sixth place finish in the table. His replacement, Roy Evans, had mixed results. He did well versus the regression predictions, but on average only a single team had a higher Sq£ only one team on average throughout his career at Liverpool. The strain of underachievement of the squad led him to quit the partnership with Gerard Houllier during the 1998-1999 season.

What becomes clear is that Gerard Houllier’s years seem to be the only managerial term where the team consistently outperformed expenditures. Houllier’s term also coincides with Liverpool’s Premier League era peak for youth players– see years six (’98-99) through eight (’00-’01) in the youth player chart earlier in this post. At that point Liverpool were running nearly double the league average with almost four homegrown players per match. Houllier leveraged players like Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, David Thompson, Dominic Matteo and Steve McManaman to outperform the MSq£ regression model (although some would point out Houllier inherited all of the homegrown talent). The later years of Houlier’s term represented a movement in the wrong direction both in terms of youth players and MSq£ – while still over performing versus expenditures, the club’s backwards slide in the table was not satisfying ownership or supporters’ expectations. Enter Rafael Benítez.

Rafa Benítez’s record is mixed. Overall, it’s a push with three seasons of over-performance, two as pushes, and one under-performance. The under-performance came in the first season, but the two pushes came in Rafa’s final three seasons with the club. Benítez didn’t inherit as many quality homegrown players and continued the steady downward trend in this metric, relying mainly on Carragher and Gerrard. This meant more of his team would be built on transfers, making success more challenging given Liverpool’s modest resources versus the competition (especially after a leveraged buyout).

His best over-performance was clearly the 2008-2009 campaign where Liverpool finished with 86 points. That year’s MSq£ was fourth highest, while the regression equation would have predicted a finish position of 6.62. Sadly, poor performance and low team morale resulted in the predicted seventh place finish in 2010. Rafa, who averaged 7 points a season more than Houllier (and who did far better in Europe) left soon afterward. [The analysis in Pay As You Play clearly shows how much better Benítez's spending was in comparison with Houllier, particularly in terms of how their respective signings increased in value.]

Overall, Liverpool’s years in the Premier League have been a push. They have underperformed versus the MSq£ rank, but outperformed the regression equation. Until the ’06-’07 season they were also had the second highest utilization of youth players within the Big Four, nearly double Chelsea and Arsenal. These points are key, as history establishes realistic expectations going forward. While Liverpool has ranked high in MSq£ rank, they have consistently been number four within the Big Four.

They also seem to have occupied an interesting position in the Big Four. Chelsea has spent absurd amounts of money to compensate for the manager carousel they’ve experienced. Manchester United has been able to combine both high expenditures and management stability to set the standard for championships in the Premier League. Arsenal has relied on the genius of Arsene Wenger to keep them competitive with a modest MSq£. Liverpool seems to have had the worst of both worlds – a high turnover in managers and a very modest MSq£ compared to the big spenders they were chasing.

Liverpool’s MSq£ has steadily fallen by about 0.1 each season since 2003-2004, and is now the second lowest of the top six in the league (Arsenal is the only team with a lower MSq£). Liverpool has regressed to an MSq£ of 1.3 for the 2010-2011 season, leading to a predicted finish of 8.64. In the near term, Liverpool looks to be an upper mid-table club if they can get the right management and spend modest money. Longer term, they face a rebuilding task that needs a vision, a budget, and a manager to execute it.

Ah non!! Il l'a publiquement attaqué en disant que l'équipe ne jouait pas bien, que c'était inadmissible et que le manque de renforts n'avait rien à voir!! Je veux bien lire que t'aime pas l'espagnol, mais mettons les choses à sa place.

Surtout qu'il a dit dès le départ que les joueurs étaient cramés (CL jusqu'à la fin, champions de la ligue, très loin en Coupe du Monde...); après il ne ramène que des jeunes pas chers. Il n'avait pas les moyens de ses ambitions, non plus.

Il gueule maintenant parce qu'il est en position de force après avoir gagné un trophée. Une connerie de sa part, à mon avis, c'est trop tôt.

Ce n'est pas le post, mais Hodgson fait des "fameux" super matchs (de merde) face à des équipes du ventre mou de la PL et il blâme les joueurs directement.

Qu'on soit d'accord, la popularité de Rafa n'a jamais été remis en question ( lors de la première page j'avais même posté un article concernant sa popularité). Cependant c'est quand même divisé. Une majorité voudrait qu'il reste ( car il n'y a pas énormément d'entraineur libre actuellement). Mais un minorité voudrait que Rafa parte. D'autres veulent le faire maintenant et prendre un entraineur d'interim pour finalement prendre un très bon entraineur à la fin de la saison. D'autres veulent attendre la fin de la saison et pour essayer de prendre Capello, car peu de gens veulent voir l'Inter prendre Spalletti.

Pour en revenir à mon post sur Rafa. Ce n'est pas que je ne l'aime pas. Mais ses déclarations m'énervent. Il est toujours celui qui est "trahi", que ce soit à l'Inter ou à Liverpool.

Puis détruire la réputation des entraineurs... ce n'est pas plutôt ce qui se passe avec l'entraineur actuel de Liverpool ( Roy)?

Je ne remet pas en cause le palmarès de Rafa, je veux simplement dire qu'il doit quand même se remettre en question parfois avant de jouer les politiciens. L'Inter venait de gagner la coupe, et voilà qu'une nouvelle polémique éclate.

That red shirt is not a shirt. It is your skin, and losing to blackpool and northampton is as painful to this family as being skinned.

If you are one of the people then there is a place down the road that will welcome you.

If you are a part of a family, then there is only one club that is not a club but a family.

You don’t support LFC just because you are from Liverpool or because of historical excellence.

You support Liverpool FC because it expresses a way of life.

Excellence of self and excellence to others.

Belief of self and belief in others.

Not listening to the doom and gloom merchants, but rising up and single mindedly pushing forwards.

When you see others doing the same you know you are kindred.

i haven’t watched a complete LFC match since Rafa Benitez’s departure.

i cannot seem to understand how it all came to pass.

That a manager was starved of funds and backstabbed by those above.

That the teams custodian was derailed by the self serving ego’s of those deemed as some of the finest servants in the clubs history.

In the case of the former, it was two greedy business men who bought a club with loans and then through a myriad of business practices, had the club paying to be owned by them.

With regards to the latter, many movies and real life stories will attest to something quite relevant here, the butler did it.

Many do not feel sorrow when the club loses on the field. Nor joy when it wins.

The actions of board and players have tainted this institution and it feels as if the true spirit departed in the summer with the previous manager.

The football fanbase is fickle to personnel, and tribal to the crest.

In this case, the onfield fortunes of the crest shall continue to be the portrait of those cumulative failings.

What is the real cost of failure for this club? Loss of champions league football? Loss of face? Loss of spirit?

You could say it’s much worse. Loss of revenue.

Football clubs are founded on emotion and passion. They grow with that passion. The turnstiles were once the lifeblood of the club. As popularity and passion grew, the advertisers came charging in, here is an avid customer base, there is money to be made.

What is the real cost of failure now?

Fans.

What Rafa did for this club over the years is hugely underestimated.

However, the far from Christian Purslow has done something which will have serious repercussions.

Rafa Benitez came to a club that had lost it’s way, he took it off the nostalgic train track and put it on the road to success. In his first season. He rallied the troops for battle and conquered Istanbul.

What happened next?

Liverpool’s popularity exploded. Books were written, DVD’s were made, Legends were told, songs were (and are still) sung and people were Knighted. The force was strong once more. Even the dark sith lord congratulated Yoda Benitez on his tactical nous in a personal letter.

What happened next?

That popularity meant that new recruits would not be shy and the talented rain from spain fell mainly on the plains of anfield. Rafa was the man to work with, Liverpool was where he worked. Spain adopted Liverpool for all Premier League intents and purposes.

Under Rafa, the brand had a revival, so powerful was that victory, it brought with it winds of change. Two men saw the global appeal of the brand and came to cash their checks.

Those cheques bounced.

In 2005, Liverpool were fashionable.

In 2010, Liverpool were a liability.

In 2011, Liverpool are once more playing catchup. But the stakes have changed.

That demise is arguably at it’s peak.

By re-establishing that brand, rekindling that inferno, Liverpool’s international stature and marketability hit new highs. Chelsea’s global appeal rocketed with a league title on the shelf and an illusionist as coach, and Manchester United’s successes have given them an epic international fanbase.

That coup de gras in 2005 put Liverpool back on the map.

By replacing Rafa Benitez with Roy Hodgson, the far from Christian Purslow has single-handedly shot Liverpool’s global fanbase in the face.

i say this without having conducted ‘market research’, remember that.

i say this from reading what people have written in 2010 across the globe via intermedia.

the simplest way for me to provide credibility for this logical conclusion is to refer to the current availability of tickets at the ground.

In 2005, for love nor money, you would not have been able to get a ticket, let alone a season ticket to anfield.

In 2010, you can’t fill the stadium by giving them for free.

Local/National fans are loyal to a fault. They travel home, and away, and very very far away. Under Roy Hodgson’s tenure, not only does the team not travel, neither do as many fans as they did in recent years.

The real money in football is not at the gate. It is on TV. It is on the internet. It is on the mobile phone. This is 2010 and beyond.

What are the current best selling ringtones on african or asian footballing fans mobiles phones? i don’t know the figures. Someone in LFC’s management might have them. What are they compared to 2005? How many people bought an e-season ticket in 2005? How many bought one after Rafa was sacked? Where were the people who bought the e-season tickets from? How many hits has the Official website lost since Rafa was sacked? On this note i can help you a little, i used to check the official site every single day, more than once a day, i’d browse the shop, i almost signed up for the credit card….almost. i hardly ever bother with the official site now. It serves as a statistical db now. i was very happy when Paul Tomkins stopped writing for the site. It showed integrity. Alot of my visits to the official site were to read Paul’s work. i’m now at Paul’s site.

Between far from Christian Purslow, the epitome of capitalism’s dark side aka G&H, the “Rafa-hating, myth perpetuating has been’s” on LiverpoolFC.tv and in the media, and now Fulham’s Roy Hodgson and the boring, soul-sucking football, i, personally do not have a direct interest in the club. i’d tentatively say that i’m not the only one.

i live in the UK. i’ve supported LFC for over 25years, i chose this club myself because no-one else in my family follows football. i don’t buy scarves and pendants and badges and memorabilia anymore. remember the important points now, UK, 25+ years.

What if i’m an international fan? Who got on board in 2005 and went and read all the LFC related material on the web i could possibly get my hands on? How many people did i persuade to join me to follow LFC after that magical moment? How many simply saw me jumping with joy when Liverpool played after that and decided to pledge allegiance? What if i’m an international fan who used LFC as an escape from my daily struggles in a life far more difficult than any £100,000/wk footballer could ever fathom.

At the time of writing, it is Barcelona 36 – 1 All Opponents.

La crise a commencé il y a déjà quelque temps (deux ans) et le stade était plein pour les matchs de l'année dernière. Je ne pense pas que ça traverse l'esprit de quelqu'un d'offrir des billets quand il existe la possibilité de les vendre. Encore moins celui des proprios.

Anfield était plein quand les autres morflaient. Aujourd'hui, Anfield est vide comme tous les autres.

Pour utiliser la phrase que j'ai entendu de Cruyff hier soir sur le Barça, on est passé d'être "Plus qu'un club" à "un club de plus"... (Même si Cruyff a dû fumer la moquette avant de le dire)
